History was made when a Mike Trout baseball card sold for a whopping $3.93 million on Saturday. The gold standard rookie card is a Topps 2009 Bowman Chrome Superfractor with a holographic design showing a babyfaced Trout with his autograph at the bottom. It was sold through Goldin Auctions and the buyer is unknown to the public. Sports betting consultant "Famous Dave" Oancea is the one who sold the one-of-a-kind card, which he bought two years ago for $400,000, giving the card a resale leap of 883 %.
Trout was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in 2009 as the 25th overall pick. The centerfielder has since become one of the highest-paid players in all of sports, signing a 12-year, $430 million contract in 2019. He's a seven-time All-Star and has been named the American League MVP three times. He has 295 career home runs, tied for 11th most among active players. He also has a knack for hitting homers on his birthday, hitting his fifth out of seven games on August 7.
The sale of Mike Trout's rookie card surpasses the previous record for the most expensive baseball card with a price tag of $3.12 million, which was held by the famous T206 Honus Wagner baseball card. Wagner was a shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the late 1800s to early 1900s. His tobacco card is so valuable because of its rarity and the lore surrounding it. American Tobacco released between 60 and 200 of the cards (57 are known to still be in existence) and ceased production after a feud with Wagner about using his likeness. The Honus Wagner card has repeatedly broken its own sales record after a handful of resales.
